Morton Grove is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton Grove is located on the southwest border of Chicago and is bordered by Aurora to the northwest and Naperville to the east. Morton Grove was founded in 1847 as a small farming village named after General James Partridge Morton, father of Mayor John A. Morton and later Governor George Bird Marshall of Illinois. In 1871, Morton Grove became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with other villages in DuPage County. The city has since grown rapidly due to its location within easy commuting distance of downtown Chicago and its strong economy based upon transportation demand from nearby businesses and services. The store became known as the "Morton Grove Store" and opened for business on October 12th, 1857 A branch of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway ran through town from north to south between 1865 and 1870; it became part of the Chicago Central Railroad System when that system acquired control of that line from Congress Avenue& South Western Railway Company on December 1st, 1870 The first schools were organized in Morton Grove with Mrs. Lavinia Putnam opening her home as an academy school on West Washington Street in 1861 In 1865 a Methodist Episcopal church was organized with Revs John Witherspoon and James King officiating A second Methodist Episcopal church also operated before it burned down in 1886 During World War I much land near where Morton Grove now stands was used for fighter planes training over Lake Michigan during Naval Air Station Muskegon Heights airstrip which is now Navy Pier Chicago .After World War I many people moved away from town due to political changes such as prohibition which started to be passed throughout America . In 1922 all but one family left when McCormick Place opened up alongLake Shore Drive making today's downtown area only one percent African American
Morton Grove was founded in 1847 by George Morton and his wife, Martha. The town grew rapidly after it became a part of the new county of Cook in 1849. In 1860, Morton Grove became the seat of village government. The first post office was established in Morton Grove on April 14, 1861. In 1865, the town passed through a land acquisition process that gave it most of its present-day boundaries.
