Morton Grove is one of the oldest cities in Chicago, having been founded as a sawmill town in 1847. Morton Grove became an agricultural center during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and began to experience growth in the 1950s when it became home to Northwestern University. In recent years, Morton Grove has become an important node in Chicagoland economy and its local government has seen significant reform throughout the years. Morton Grove's history dates back to 1847 when James Auld opened a sawmill hereabouts on the banks of the Chicago River. After years of growth and progress within Morton Grove through various endeavors such as agriculture, industry, education and suburbanization, it was announced on November 5th 1958 that Northwestern University would leave its longtime home in Evanston for what would be known as "The Loop." The move was met with mixed reactions from many residents who opposed this massive investment by Northwestern University while others were quick to embrace what would soon be known as The Loop community. Today, there are numerous businesses located within walking distance of each other which makes it easy for people to get around town without feeling like they have to take public transportation or drive long distances. In 1907-1908 Morris Cooker built what is now known as Cooker Place after donating land for it next door on Wabash Avenue between Union Park Road (now Higgins Boulevard) and Canal Drive (now Vandenbroeck Avenue). Cooker Place served as both a grocery store andresidential district until 1948 when most notably its property was used by Uptown Chicago retailer Sears Department Store before being converted into apartment buildings thereafter becoming part of today's Gateway Tower development complex including apartments five stories high During World War II veteran William Sennett donated land at 7462 Wabash Avenue for use as Camp Morton which housed up to 4500 servicemen from all over America during their stay here following their induction into military service On October 14th 1951 Pritzker Plaza opened with much fanfare in downtownChicago following plans by Mayor Richard J Daley who believed that downtown needed more commercial activity given increasing crime rates and shortages due to post-war reconstruction efforts.
