The community was named for General Simon Morton, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created the United States of America. Morton Grove was first settled in 1854 by German immigrants who had come to work on a canal project through what is now Morton Grove Township. The township was organized in 1857 and became one of four townships within Cook County when it was created from parts of two other townships – North Aurora and South Holland. In 1933, Morton Grove merged with neighboring Winnetka to form one large municipality that still exists today. At its peak, during World War II, Morton Grove had over 20 businesses employing over 100 people; however, since then many businesses have closed or been amalgamated into larger local municipalities such as Winnetka or Aurora. Today there are only a few small businesses left remaining in Morton Grove which contribute significantly to its sense of community character and identity. One significant event which took place in early history of this locality occurred on July 4th (1794) when 250 French Canadians living near present-day Elmhurst came together under leadership of Jean-Baptiste Carpentier to demand equal treatment under American law as well as land rights for their Quebecois constituents living elsewhere within Canada without having similar representation under British rule (later known as Canada). This event helped spark development of what would become known as downtown Park Ridge around this time period with its wide open spaces including Market Street between First Street west and State Street east just north of Lake Michigan
