Morton Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton Grove is one of two towns in Cook County that are both located on the north side of Chicago and have a total population over 15,000 residents. The other town is Peoria. The first settlers to Morton Grove were families from Holland who arrived in 1837. By 1852, there were twelve houses in the community and it had a population of seventy-six people. In 1854, Morton Grove became an independent township when it was organized as part of Cook County by Act 5th Chapter 7th Statute. In 1865, Morton Grove became a village after being granted city status by the state legislature under Section 8vo of the general statutes which provided for such cities within Cook County “to be numbered with and subject to the same laws and regulations as cities within this State” (Parrish). At its inception, Morton Grove had no public works or services apart from some streetlights and an elementary school which opened in 1870. By 1886, however, Vernon Park had been erected on what is now Morris Avenue and it became home to most of the village's businesses including banks; insurance companies; hotels; manufacturing plants; smaller stores; agricultural land holdings; movie theaters; auto shows; carnivals/exhibits etc.; all while also serving as home to many residents working at these businesses either directly or through their families members who lived nearby (Kirkpatrick). Morton Grove experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location on Lake Michigan just south of downtownChicago – providing easy access to munitions production sites across South Side Chicago – as well as its close proximity to major military bases like Navy Pier and Soldier Field (Fletcher). The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1900, it had a population of over 500 people. During World War I, Morton Grove served as a training center for American soldiers. After the war, the town began to decline and its population decreased until it reached its current level of around 100 people in 2009.
