Morton Grove was once a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is now part of the city of Chicago. Morton Grove was founded by farmers in 1892 and it became an agricultural community. The first post office was established in Morton Grove in 1893. In 1904, the community gained city status and a fire department was established. In 1909, Morton Grove achieved its first annexation by the City of Chicago. The population of Morton Grove grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s as new businesses were founded and families arrived from other parts of Illinois to live here. The economy changed during World War II as many men were drafted into service and war production increased. After the war, living conditions improved but crime rates remained high. This combination made it difficult for people to afford homes or raise children in this growing community. In 1970, Morton Grove experienced another significant change when it voted to become an all-city municipality with effect from May 1, 1971. At that time, Chicagos largest city boundary had not yet been finalized so incorporation within the larger metropolitan area would be automatic under this measure without any further vote by residents or negotiation between city officials and local business owners about what would be included within their borders (Foley). Since then, there have been several attempts by Mayor Richard Maturen (D) to make changes to how life functions within the municipality which have been met with resistance from some members of the citizenry who feel that they should retain control over their own lives and affairs inside their own municipality rather than being forced into an integrated urban environment where they are at best second class citizens while at worst subject to extortionate taxation (Foley). Despite these difficulties, progress has been made towards making Morton Grove into a more sustainable community where economic development leads to job growth for residents while reducing crime rates; creating opportunities for young adults; increasing access to quality education; and preserving traditional values such as agriculture/farming which are important aspects of local culture (Lopez).
