Morton Grove is a census-designated place in the Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,828 at the 2010 census. Morton Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Morton Grove comes from two pioneers, David and Solomon Morton. They were farmers who settled in what is now Morton Grove in 1847. The first post office in what is now Morton Grove was called North Aurora and opened on November 1, 1851. It was renamed to honor General David Wainwright (1793-1866), a Union soldier and governor of Illinois during the American Civil War who fought at Peoria Heights and Monmouth Junction. In 1868, South Aurora became a separate town and it retained its original name until May 4, 1913 when it became part of Morton Grove with a population of 10,887 people. Morton Groves nickname came about because of their large grove of Elm trees that lined several streets near their homes. Many residents would go out into the grove to pick apples or other fruit as they grew up; this led to the nickname "the apple orchard". The grove also produced grapes which were enjoyed by many residents until Prohibition made them illegal to produce in America in 1920. In 1967, local resident Don Auerbach began growing soybeans on his family's farm east of town - one of the first soybean crops grown outside America. That year marked an important milestone for Lester Baughman - he became president and CEO (CEO) of Ford Motor Company's Midwest division based in Dearborn Heights MI - making him one of the most powerful people in America at that time.. Since then much has changed within Morton Grove - not least due to Apple Inc.'s decision to build its largest dedicating manufacturing plant outside North America here starting back in 2007 - but some constants remain: Our friendly community presence remains strong through our annual events such as Township Fair Day parade & Fundraiser for township charities; our rich history provides fodder for historical research by local historians; & we continue working hard everyday towards becoming "the best Place To Live In Chicago"."
