Morton Grove is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Morton Grove neighborhood lies within the city limits of Morton Grove and has a total population of 97,714 as of 2009. The first gun barrels were made in Morton Grove by Nicholas de Las Cases and his brother Valentine in 1795. A barrel costs around $3 to $5 to make and requires around two months to complete. In 1857, Wm Halsell & Sons organized a barrel factory in Morton Grove called “Halsell’s Barrel Works” which became one of the largest manufacturers of gun barrels in the world. In 1892-93, Paine Bros., manufacturers guns and ammunition at their plant on Racine Avenue west of downtown Chicago produced all new types of rifles for Ulysses S Grant during his personal campaign for president—the first time firearms had ever been used in that election process. In 1907-08 Giffords Rifle Factory began production at their facility on State Street east of downtown Chicago; it was eventually renamed Giffords Machine Shop after its founder Walter Fenton Gifford Sr., who served as mayor of Chicagoland from 1951 to 1958 and then as governor from 1974 to 1980 before retiring at age 90. In 1923-24 Republic Armory began production at their plant on North Western Avenue northwest of town; it became known as Republic Firearms after becoming an armory producing semiautomatic pistols under contract to law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois until it closed its doors in 1997 following bankruptcy protection due to overproduction issues caused by competition from Glock AG worldwide.[1] In 1984-85 Parkman Gunsmithing Co., Ltd., located northeast corner Racine Ave./Wabash Ave., southwest corner Kedzie Ave./Cottage Drive built three pistolsmithing facilities: one near East Grand Boulevard/State St.; another near Ashland Avenue/South Side Highway; and a third near Westchester Street/Lake Shore Drive[2][3]. In 1920, the company moved to its current location on West Side Drive in Morton Grove, Illinois. In 1949, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA).
