In 1916, when World War I began, many citizens mobilized to help support their country by buying food and supplies from nearby factories that were closed due to wartime restrictions on munitions production. Many local businesses stayed open during wartime shortages because they operated under military contracts that exempted them from government regulations governing business activity; these contracts gave rise to the term "army store" in Morton Grove society).
