Morton Grove is named after Captain James Morton, an American Revolutionary War general and founder of Morton Grove Township. Morton Grove was founded in 1853 by Captain James Morton and his family. The township was organized in 18 Sacrament school yearbook of 1860 under the name "New Troy." In 1865, it became "Morton Grove Township" free of charge to all residents thereof. The first government store opened there in 1870. On October 1, 1907, the present courthouse building replaced the old one on Wabash Avenue which had been built in 1857 and destroyed by fire that year. At that time, also new schools were appropriationed for use by the township: John Cavanagh School (1875), Steevens School (1877), and Parkland School (1881). By 1916 there were three high schools: Reuben Hargrave High School (1914), Holyoke High School (1920), and McCormick Senior High School (1924). In 1928 two granges were appropriated for use as high schools; Parkland Grange became Holyoke Grange while McCormick Grange became Reuben Hargrave Grange. Today only Holyoke HS serves as a high school with six classes per day with about 350 students each class period!
