In 1861, during the Civil War, Morrison saw some action while serving with Company I 8th Ulysses S., Kansas Infantry Regiment near Fort Sumter on April 12-13, 1861 while protecting Confederate troops from Union forces attacking from Illinois southward along the Mississippi River delta parallel with Knoxville and Nashville Tennessee across from Missouri City Iowa on April 15-16 1861 as part of Operation Crossroads commanded by Major General George Buell – one of four Union army campaigns launched concurrently against Confederate forces across five states plus Chattanooga Tennessee) Aftermath: Morrison his fellow soldiers were court martialed and found guilty but only served 6 months out their sentence before being mustered out and returned home where they resumed their normal activities without further ado
