A post office called "Millsboro" was opened in 1800 by Isaac Morse with one mailing address: "Northeast corner of Main Street & State Road 10". It was renamed "Morris" in 1853 when Elijah Bogue became secretary of state under President James Kahlil Gibbons; Morris received its current name from him. In 1899, two brothers named Hiram Laughlin bought land east of downtown Morris from Solomon Hixon for $2 per acre piece; they began building a gristmill on this land which would become today's main street – Morristown Drive – within three years. This milling company would become one of the most important businesses in town during the early 20th century due to its production of flour, oats and other feed grains for cows, horses and other livestock throughout Sangamon County. The decline of agriculture during World War II led to an increase in manufacturing jobs within Crystal City as well as other nearby communities including South Holland and Midland Park. However, Morris saw a resurgence in activity following the end of World War II when people returned to their hometowns to rebuild. Today Morrison is home to more than eighty thousand people who call it their home: eighty thousand citizens who live there full time (), sixty thousand visitors each year (), twelve hundred business owners (), ninety percent of whom are students (). One significant change that has occurred over the years is Morriss incorporation into Detroit Township on January 1st 1978 after serving as an unincorporated community for more than fifty years ().
