Morris is a small town in the Illinois River Valley of west-central Illinois. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Morris post office was established on December 12, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1966. The first settler in Morris was John Coker. The town was platted in 1839 by James Hickey and named for Colonel George Washington Morris who had come to the area to survey land for a railroad. The first store opened in 1840 and included a wagon shop and blacksmith shop. A school became available in 1846 and received funding from the General Government Fund which went into effect that year. In 1861, a mill was built with power from an engine donated by Amos Davenport (founder of Davenport Railroad). By 1870, there were five churches; twoMethodists and three Baptists; four stores; one hotel; one grocery store; one bakery; six schools (one public and five private); two Tanner families ran a tannery/fline business from 1855 to 1860 In 1897 whenMorris became part of Peoria Township it lost its independent character but kept some aspects of its village atmosphere like the Friends Meeting House which still stands today as part of First United Methodist Church located within walking distance of all businesses downtown including Morrison's post office where you can find several historic photos taken inside during their days as an active meeting house before being torn down around 1990s when most buildings were moved out of downtown to make way for new development . Morris also has a few interesting facts like they have been mentioned twice as having been chosen as site for Interstate 90 along with other towns near Chicago due to their scenic location! In 1916, Morris became part of Cook County when that county was created from portions of DuPage and Cass County. In 1922, Morriss Township merged into Cook County as well as other adjoining townships. At that time there were only two schools within Morrishtownship: one for boys at Morrish High School and one for girls at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy (now John Carroll University). The combined population ofMorrishtownship reached 1,200 by 1930.
