On July 1, 1913, Morris became a Gilmore Township when it was combined with four other townships that had been organized within Rockford: Dunkirk Heights (1907), East Macomb (1910), North Side (1911) and West Side (1913). At that time it had a population of 697 people. The last major change to Morris occurred on November 3rd when it merged into the new city of Chicago as part of its annexation process for that city’s consolidation into the United States following World War II. In recent years there has been an effort underway to revitalize downtown Morris which includes extensive redevelopment of many buildings including the former City Hall building which houses various municipal departments as well as office space for businesses and restaurants; renovation/construction of numerous streetscape improvements along Broadway Avenue between Wacker Drive and State Street; redevelopment/construction of several multi-story buildings comprising what used to be local banks across from First Federal Bank; addition/remodelation/refurbishment/renovationof several movie theaters located throughout downtown complementing streetmosphere described herein.)
