Montgomery, Illinois is a small town that has had its share of gun related tragedies. One such tragedy happened when John Riggins was killed in a Gun violence incident. John was an avid hunter and shooter who loved to hunt and shoot with his friends. One of the most recent tragedies to occur in Montgomery occurred on October 15th, 2018 when Jimmy Hill was shot and killed by police officers while barricaded inside his home. This tragedy comes as no surprise as Jimmy had been involved in numerous fights with the police department and had been charged with several misdemeanors. There have also been shootings incidents that have taken place in Montgomery over the years. On July 25th, 2002 two people were shot at close range while waiting at a bus stop. Just four months later on November 2nd, 2002 another person was shot and killed after getting into an argument with their family members outside a convenience store near Montgomerys high school. Despite these tragedies, there has been much progress made since then. In 2013, Montgomery became one of the first towns in Illinois to pass a ordinance legalizing concealed carry without a permit. This ordinance helped reduce shootings within the community and made it easier for residents to get permits without having to go through long process or risk being deported back to their home country if they violated the law.

Montgomery is named after General George Washington Montieth who served as commander of American forces in Canada during the War of 1812 and later served as Governor of New York City from 1785-1789 before becoming Ulysses S Grant's Vice President on his first term (1865-1869). The Village green which remains today one of the most popular tourist destinations within Montgomery is also home to what may be America's oldest continuously operated grocery store - The Green Gables Grocery Co., founded by Mrs.(Fannie) Bissell on Oct 1st 1916 - now part of Walmart
