He designed a device that was used to protect shooters from getting their eyes or heads shot out by balls flying through the air. This invention was called the "Nourse Device." One of the earliest shooting Protection Devices in Montgomery, Illinois was the "Pistol Helmet." This invention was created in 1892 and it consisted of a metal helmet with an adjustable strap that allowed shooters to fit it over their head. The Pistol Helmet helped reduce eye injury caused by gunshots. In 1915, another invention was developed in Montgomery called the "Flaming Helmet." This device consisted of a metal shell that had flamethrowers sewn into it. When someone fired a gun, the flamethrowers would start burning and would create enough heat to prevent any shots from going through the helmet and harming anyone else. Flamethrowers were also used as part of artillery fire during World War I. In 1919, Shooter's Protective Equipment was introduced into Montgomery when Sheriff Hargrave donated his collection of pistols to be protected. His donation provided Shooters with helmets, pants and shotguns for use while hunting and target practice. These protective devices became known as "Hargrave's Hatches." Montgomery, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. With a population of 765 as of the 2010 census, it is the smallest community in Kane County. The current mayor is Danica Kirka and the village council has five members. Montgomery was platted on December 2, 1871 by Wm. Montgomery and Alfred Fenton with land that had been donated to the village by Levi Richardson. The first post office was established in Montgomery on October 12, 1872 by J.H. Kerridge and Lillie Hinton. A gristmill was built near present day Montgomeryville on the Scioto River in 1874 and operated until 1907; it later became part of Beechview Records & Graphics Corporation. The first school building in Montgomery was a one-room log cabin erected in 1865 by Mrs Anna McMurtry for her daughter Sarah Lyon School #2 (now Griggs Middle School). In 1889, trustees purchased land east of present day Agricultural Road for $10 per acre from John Sprague for use as a public school district; this area now includes most of what is today called Montgomeryshire Township (later Kankakee Township) during its early years when there were only five schools within the boundaries of Montgomery Village proper: Sarah Lyon School #1 (now Park Elementary School), Mrs Anna McMurtry’s House #3 (now Post Office Museum), Old Saw Mill Pond “A” Shop (now Kelley Elementary School), Mr Ransom Chaffee’s Woolen Millinery store building No 4 & 5 (now First National Bank Building) and North Spring Green Cemetery where classes were held until 1893 when an addition to Stevenson High School added girls under grades 8 through 10 . In 1895/96 trustees purchases additional land east of present day Agricultural Road for $20 per acre from Jonas Goodhue which included all or portions ofpresentday Griggs Middle School., Old Saw Mill Pond “B” Shop(later Shireman Elementary School), East Spring Green Cemetery etc.; these lands still form part ofthe Village limits today . By 1896/97 primary schools had been built at Edgewood Place on South Wright Street between Broadway Boulevard and Maple Avenue (&northwest corner Of Maple Avenue);grades 1-8 were taught there while9-12 students attended Morningside Academy which burned down in 1898 ; repairs began immediately& after many months & many hard work local citizens succeeded thru subscription fund to rebuild academy as West Side High Schools opened Aug 1915 across street from original academy lot See also article "Montgomery" online at HistoryLink In 1924, blockhouse No 9 along Prairie du Chien Road south of town was added to CICUSA list as having been destroyed by fire On January 7th 1925 at 1 PM local time an uncontrolled brush fire started north side off Prairie du Chien road about 3 ½ miles west from town started burning pine trees around blockhouse 9 woodchips caught fire quickly spreading rapidly into surrounding fields all around house eventually reaching 6 acres losing windows, doors & roofing then using dogs teams water cannons got line around property stopped inferno
