This village remained until it merged with Montgomery on December 15, 1912. The first settler to live permanently in Montgomery Township was John Williamson on July 24, 1836. He built a cabin near what is now the courthouse square. Williamson's home still stands and is open to visitors today as a museum operated by the township government

Montgomery was founded on November 3, 1836 by immigrants from Scotland and England who arrived on the Montrose shipyards in Quincy, Massachusetts. The first post office in Montgomery opened on December 5, 1836. Montgomery became a village on July 1, 1868. The settlement had two churches by 1872: one Congregational and one Methodist. A school was built in1882 and remained open until 1951 when it was replaced by Griggs Elementary School which also served as the town's public library until it closed in 2013. A branch of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway served Montgomery from 1892 to 1955; this line now runs through neighboring Park Ridge. In 1898, an express company called "Montgomery Mail" began service between Montgomery and Decatur Junction via Decatur Street Station and Mayfair Avenue Station; this company ceased operations in 1902 because of low ridership In 1954, Pabst Brewing Company moved its production brewery from Milwaukee to Cumberland Township (now Montville) due to high taxes levied against brewing companies within Cook County while brewers were protected under state law; Pabst later moved its headquarters to Schaumburg IL In 2013-14 the elementary school building burned down while students were inside after a short fire that started near their locker room

In 1836, the town received its charter from the Illinois General Assembly, and soon became an important center for agricultural production and trade. In 1840, Montgomery acquired its present name when it was chosen as the county seat of Cook County. The city gradually grew throughout the 19th century, becoming one of Chicago's largest communitys. In World War II, Montgomery played an important role in helping to fuel American war efforts; during the conflict, many buildings in downtown were used as military barracks. Today, Montgomery is a thriving community with a vibrant economy and strong cultural attractions.
