Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,449 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery was founded in 1855 by Emmett Montgomery and his brother Ahncey Montgomery. The two brothers built a log cabin on what is now Second Street. They named their town after Monterey County, California where they were born and raised. In 1857, the first post office was open in Montgomery and it operated until it was discontinued in 1908. The first store in Montgomery opened on First Street in 1861. The first school opened in 1865 and taught primary grades until 1925 when it became a high school. In 1915, the town had its first professional football team as the Montgomeryshire Football Club played against neighboring Park Ridge High School before folding that year due to lack of players and money. From 1924-1927, Montgomery hosted an annual fair which attracted merchants from across Cook County as well as people from other states who came to inspect farm products being grown in the area nearMount Greenwood Cemetery
In 1871, the Illinois General Assembly decided to form Montgomery County, Ill., from parts of Cook and Will counties. The county was named in honor of General Robert E. Montgomery, who helped lead the Union forces during the American Civil War.
