Montgomery, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Montgomery County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,813. The city is located in central Illinois on the right bank of the Missouri River. It was founded by George Montgomery in 1828 as an agricultural community on what is now Edwardsville Road. In 1848, Montgomery renamed its settlement after General John Fayette Worth, who had fought for America during the Mexican–American War and later became a hero of the Civil War. The town grew rapidly until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of 50,000 people; however, over time it has declined moderately due to suburbanization and other factors. The history of Montgomery began with George Montgomery's arrival there in 1828 from Maryland as he traveled to find new land for his farmstead on what is now Edwardsville Road which he named "Montgomery". At first there were only a few hundred people living here because most everyone relied upon farming or trade endeavors to support themselves and their families. By 1830, when George died leaving his home and land to his children Montgomerys had already started developing this new community into one that would soon become a thriving metropolis according to some historians due to several factors such as transportation improvements made by Major Amos Kendall (a pioneer settler) which led directly to increased commerce within town limits; supply shortages caused by wars with Mexico and England; increase in immigration from Kentucky due to improved transportation opportunities available at that time across country through wagon trains headed downriver past St Louis; and religious revivalism among early Methodists/ Baptists resulting in additions of more than 1,000 residents over six years period including almost half women total making Montgomery one of earliest female-dominated communities in America In 1850s Colonel John Pemberton purchased approximately 6 square miles (15 km2) northwestward along present day I-65 corridor from Wabash Railroad Company near Cottage Grove eastward extending all the way downriver past St Louis joining up with Cumberland Railroad at Peoria Junction This area became known as Pemberton Township which continued until it was abolished when Chicago annexed metropolitan area Due to increasing railroad traffic along I-65 corridor northward Interstate 69 replaced both railways beginning late 1960s becoming an important artery connecting Chicago's MIDDLEWEST region with rural IL & MO many small towns along I-69 corridor lost access / commerce while larger cities gained access leading eventually Morena Township being created adjacent south side providing similar services

Montgomery is a small town in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 537 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Montgomery was James Gairdner, who arrived in 1814. Gairdner named his land "Montgomery" after General John Montgomery, who led American forces during the American Revolution. In 1830, Isaac Higginbotham purchased from Gairdner and laid out a township on what is now the east side of town. Higginbotham's home still stands today and is used as a museum for local history and genealogy purposes. In 1835, Elijah White bought two hundred acres (10 hectares) of land from Higginbotham to establish White Settlement Township. This became one of the most important townships in Montgomery County due to its location near enough to both Chicago and Springfield that development could take place easily without having to leave the township limits. The first store in Montgomery opened on July 1, 1836 by Solomon Kappeler and it continued operation until 1865 when it closed because of economic conditions caused by the Panic of 1837. The first school was built in 1840 by Mrs Lillie Pemberton but it burned down in 1850. A new school was built on what is now Park Drive between 1860 and 1862 by Rev Simeon Weisiger with help from subscription donors including Dr Samuel Morse Sr., inventor of Morse Code . In 1870-71 school district No 2 organized under state statute within township with seven schools serving 3 wards: Montgomerysville (north), Greenfield (southwest), Old Northglen (east) & Beech Grove (west). The old High School building still stands on Market Street across from Shriners Hospital today as an exhibit for local history students generally interested in early African American settlement hereabouts
Montgomery was founded in 1815 by James Montgomery and his brother-in-law, John P. Morgan. The town grew rapidly and in 1827 it incorporated as a village. In 1859, Montgomery became the county seat of Cook County.
