Montgomery is a small community in southern Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Montgomery County seat of Montgomery. The town was founded in 1853 as a result of the construction of the Peoria and Montgomery Railroad by J.B. Montgomery and others. The name "Montgomery" comes from James Bledsoe's home on Montrose Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he purchased land for the town in 1853. The first store opened in 1850 and by 1870 had become one of the most important businesses in what became known as "the Old Northwest". In that year, it also began to serve as a stop on stagecoach routes between Springfield, Illinois (and points east) and Chicago, Illinois. In 1860s during the American Civil War, local residents aided Union forces by supplying them with food and munitions; later they were recognized for their heroism when General Ulysses S Grant visited Montgomery on his way to capture Vicksburg Alabama in 1865 and noted their support for the war effort. In 1865//1868, due to an agricultural depression caused by lack of marketable crops following Reconstruction efforts throughout America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation – primarily among slaveholders – many farmers abandoned their fields around Montgomery; however business continued to be strong due to its position as a crossroads on Route 66 which transported goods northward from Springfield via Mobile & Pensacola then down I-465 until reaching St Louis MO before continuing northwesterly through Johnson City TN before reaching Indianapolis IN at Northside Drive/Montgomery Road intersection.– This route served as an important artery through much of Appalachia until Interstate 64 replaced it about 25 years later when traffic shifted primarily southward along I-94 corridor from STL to Indy

Montgomery is a small town in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years and first came into contact with Europeans through fur traders in the 17th century. The earliest English settlers arrived in 1671 and built a log cabin on what is now Old Montgomerie Road. In 1806, surveyors named it after General James Montgomery who had fought in the Mexican War and later served as governor of Missouri Territory. In 1828, land worth $1 million was purchased from the Kaskaskia Sioux Indians to build a planned town on what is now First Street between Halsted Street and Wabash Avenue. By 1830, some 707 homes had been built; schools were established in 1831 and1832; businesses were organized; streets were laid out; and water wheel power was acquired to drive sawmills and other mills. In 1840–41 General Abraham Lincoln visited Montgomery while he was campaigning for President and balloting took place at several places including Montgomery courthouse on First Street which still stands today (the building burned down in 1880). In 1865, when Union troops sacked Fort Pulaski near Springfield during their raids into central Illinois during the American Civil War, they destroyed much of Montgomery but left behind a few homes that would be rebuilt over time. A post office opened here in 1865 under the name of New Albany (later Alton) until it closed in 1893 due to lack of mail service from Springfield. Following World War II there grew an agricultural economy with cotton production accounting for most of the jobs growth here until recent times when services have replaced agriculture as mainstay of town's economy The first black person to live permanently in Montgomery appeared here around 1955 when Mrs. Rena Richardson moved into her home on Third Street after being accepted by white neighbors who considered her integration “a necessary evil” because African Americans could not attend white schools or work downtown In recent years numerous festivals have taken place throughout year such as art shows/exhibits/fairs/pumpkin patch walks etc., all Free & open to everyone regardless race or socio-economic background
Montgomery was a small town in Illinois until the late 1800s. It was founded in 1825 by James Montgomery and his family. The town became a railroad stop on the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. In 1883, Montgomery was incorporated as a city.
