It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, and Lake Michigan to the north. The name Montgomery comes from three sources: one originates from an early settler named Nicholas Montgomery who came to what is now Montgomery in 1836, while another source suggests that it may come from "montgomery" (a Welsh place name) meaning "place where trees grow." The third source suggests that it may be derived from "moor" or "mountain," as there are many mountains in Cook County. According to the 2010 census, Montgomery has a total area of , all land.
