Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery was founded in 1855 by John and Mary Montgomery as a farming community on the east side of what is now Wellesley Avenue in Evanston Township. In 1887, it became an incorporated municipality. The Montgomery post office served Montgomery from 1855 to 1886 and from 1889 to 1905. The first sale of Postmaster General George Stephenson's Report on Railroad Construction for 1887 led to incorporation of the community name as Montgomery in 1888. In 1922, construction began on Lake Shore Drive which ran through downtown Montgomery and formed Northwestern Illinois' only link with the outlying communities along Lake Michigan until that highway was widened and rebuilt in the late 1960s Interstate 90 bypassed downtown Montgomery altogether. In 1933, fire destroyed most of downtown but firefighters were able to keep buildings alight long enough for citizens to gather around a flagpole outside City Hall before returning inside for lunch In 1949, voters passed a bond issue making improvements such as better schools and more public transportation available including streetcars and buses; this helped improve public opinion towards city government and made possible annexation of adjacent municipalities during the following decade From 1948-1957, Governor Harry S Truman campaigned actively withinuniversity boundaries for election as Mayor of Chicago; he won without running against incumbent Averell Harriman who had been popular among city residents because he had years earlier fought successfully for prohibition in New York City . On January 11th 1957 President Dwight D Eisenhower announced "Eisenhower Plan For Good Roads" which called for federal funding to be used principally for upgrading national highways throughout America .
