One block west of this first plat (numbered 3rd Street NE), he erected a large log cabin known as "Haskin's Castle" which served as the first courthouse in Montgomery. In 1872 Haskins donated land between 4th and 5th Streets NW to Stonington Presbyterian Church for use as their parish graveyard; this property remains today within the incorporated limits of Montgomery. Formerly a farming community with many small farms scattered around its periphery, trade gradually shifted from agriculture to manufacturing following World War II when demand for steel Increased greatly due to war production being centered in Chicago and other Illinois cities; however, much of that industry has since left town including major employers such as Motorola Inc., Boeing Co., Ford Motor Company and Caterpillar Incorporated before consolidation into those companies' larger regional headquarters located near downtown Springfield. The first school in Montgomery opened on November 25,1860. The current elementary school opened its doors to students in fall of 1957; it has since been renamed after Mrs. Clara Byrd Peck Elementary School (1914-present). After World War II ended and America entered into an era of austerity, many people left Montgomery for good due to scarce jobs and limited opportunities for income near home.
