Most of the activities that take place in Montgomery take place outside of town limits so there is little opportunity for residents to become involved in local politics or business decisions

Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is located in the eastern part of the county and is bordered on the south by Carbondale, on the east by McHenry and on the north by Peoria. It forms a single-town Micropolitan Statistical Area with Carbondale. The first settler in Montgomery was James Fenton who arrived in 1837. He built a log cabin near what is now Main Street. A post office called Monterey was established in 1841, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1847, John Prentice settled at what is now Elm Street and platted his land around a large cotton gin he had erected along Route 8. In 1861, Isaac Newton settled at what is now Niles Road and platted his land around a gristmill he had constructed along Route 6A. In 1865, George Waddell moved to Montgomery from Geneva Township and platted his land about 1 mile northeast of present day Main Street. He built an adobe home which still stands today as Waddell Hall (now part of State University of Illinois). In 1867, John Crain bought property from Waddell and laid out streets through his farmstead into what are now Maple Avenue and Elm Street. By 1870, Montgomery had four stores: Jno Haskins & Son Store on Main Street; Emmet Bros store on Elm street; Geo Rhea’s grocery store on Maple avenue; and E&W Thompson’s millinery shop off Maple avenue across from Geo Rhea’s grocery store (later renamed Peoples Millinery). The first post office in Montgomery opened its doors on November 15 of that year with Fenton as its first mail carrier under Superintendent Lewis Silliman Jr.. The first newspaper published in Montgomery was The Keystone Democrat which was published starting December 3rd of that year with editor Rufus Kingsbury as its publisher... By 1880 there were six businesses operating within the community: five general stores plus one millinery shop operated by Geo Rhea & Sons; four blacksmith shops operated by James Fenton & Sons including one known as “Indian Forge” managed by John Prentice; two churches also ran their own schools - First Presbyterian Church continued to operate while Baptist church merged into same congregation circa 1890 or so while Methodist church started up circa 1840 or so; three homes were used for agricultural purposes - Elijah Howe's farmstead west of town center served as an early dairy operation while others included Alpheus Howe's house east side served as an early hog barn... local physician Dr Jno Haskins treated many residents during this time period including Mrs Elizabeth Howland who lived adjacent to school yards... several residences were destroyed during tornado outbreak Outbreak Number VI lasting thru Oct 20th 1889 when entire village came down followed about 10 days later by rebuild including new courthouse building/ Elks Lodge... During these years no public works were ever created outside city limits other than repairing fences inside city limits
Montgomery was first settled in 1831 by farmers from Ohio and Indiana. The town grew quickly, and in 1849 it became a city. In 1870, Montgomery became the capital of Illinois.
