Montgomery was incorporated as a municipality on December 12, 1853 by act of the state legislature during its third session following county line changes that had taken place since1851 when Cook County was divided into three parts: North Shore (now Racine), South Shore (now Lake Forest), and West Side (now Lawndale). At its incorporation, Montgomery had a population of 602 people and held political boundaries that included Kankakee Heights to the east and west while Urbana to the north including most of what is now Wheaton Park along with portions of Beverly Hills Park including Peoria Avenue which lies just within city limits today; what remains of this original township boundary can be found just south of State Street between Eustace Road and Ionia Avenue today’s Gray Line section between Evanston Township on one side and Montrose Village on another side
