Montgomery was founded in 1855 by Horace McCoy and his wife Eliza as a small farming community on the west side of Rock Island County. In 1887, McCoy donated land to establish Montgomery Village which today constitutes much of what makes up Montgomery. The name “Montgomery” comes from two sources: one is a corruption of Old French “montaigne” meaning mountain or hill (the word being pronounced with an English hard "g," like "gray"), while another origin story suggests that General Wade Hampton called his own home “Montgomery” after some friends who had settled thereabouts. In 1892, James Melson moved to Montgomery from Belleville and changed its name to Melson Park. At first it only housed horse barns and outbuildings but soon began housing residents as well as their horses and carriages on graded streets near downtown Montgomery. Today Melson Park remains one of city hall's most popular tourist destinations for both visitors and locals alike due to its many unique features including restored pioneer architecture dating back to the 1800s, gardens with picnic tables and grills for summertime picnics, an indoor pool complete with diving board/wall dive feature - perfect for swimming lessons - as well as a variety of art galleries and restaurants featuring international cuisine

The first settlers in what is now Montgomery were farmers who arrived around 1812. In 1836, General Sam Houston bought land from these early settlers and founded Montrose Township. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), General Houston's army fought against Mexican forces in Montgomery and Box Elder counties. The Battle of Montrose was one of the most important engagements of that war. In 1861, as part of the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union General James Pemberton's encampment at Battle Creek near present-day Montgomery while Pemberton was besieging Richmond, Virginia. After Jackson's victory at Antietam days later restored Ulysses S. Grant's reputation among his officers, Confederate Generals John Hunt Morgan and Braxton Bragg decided to attack Pemberton instead of retreating to safety through montgomery County Pass which would have allowed reinforcement to arrive from Lake Erie via water routes available only during peacetime; they sacked and burned what remained of Pemberton's encampment before withdrawing back into Georgia two days later under cover of darkness with no loss to their own force or captured supplies or men prisoners taken by Grant.--"An Unknown History: A History of Montgomery," accessed October 21st, 2016--
Montgomery was a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1848 by General James Montgomery and his family. The community grew until it had a population of over 1,000 people in 1880. In 1892, the village merged with neighboring Decatur and became part of the new city of Chicago.
