Montgomery is a town in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Montgomery was Ezra Booth in 1821. A post office called "Montgomery" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town name may be derived from nearby Mount Zion Baptist Church which had been founded by Reverend James Baldwin and his wife Eliza Payne Baldwin in 1824. In 1830, John Prentice built a tavern on the site of what is now known as Prentice's Tavern Square. In 1831-32 John Ladd built a dam across the Fox River to create irrigation water for his farm near present day Montgomery Mall. A Presbyterian church (later Methodist) was located on High Street east of present day Monterey Road when it was organized in 1840 and named First Presbyterian Church of Montgomery; this church remains an active member today and has continued to serve as the town's only Place of worship since its establishment. In 1850s Isaac Goodrich donated 240 acres (99 ha) northwest of present day Monterey Road to make way for a new township; Goodrich also donated land for what would become Park Ridge Cemetery which opened its doors on July 1, 1860. Goodrich Township ultimately became Arlington Heights Township when that township was organized into Cook County on May 10th, 1903. In 1861 Union General Edward Halleck ordered all Ulysses S Grant’s men within three miles (5 km) of Springfield Armory to surrender unconditionally or face military execution; these orders were delivered orally rather than through written order so as not to reveal Grant’s location to Confederate forces positioned around Springfield Armory waiting to capitulate or fight while they did so – subsequently leading Union General David Twiggs Orderly Jr., commanding 3rd Brigade Third Illinois Infantry Regiment “to charge up upon them with bayonets fixed” if they could not surrender without being executed – instead surrendered unconditionally at 4:00 pm after hours long battle with no loss on either side despite heavy casualties among bothcombatants and civilians including some 225 women and children who had taken refuge inside the armory complex before hostilities began

Montgomery, Illinois is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery was founded in 1839 by Capt. James Montgomery and his family as a station on the Great Western Railroad. The original Montgomery home still stands today and is used for historical purposes. The first settler in what would become Montgomery was Pottsville resident Isaac Troup who arrived in 1838. He built a cabin on the east side of present-day Monterey Road near present day Lyons Court House which he named after his father’s birthplace in Kentucky, Montrose Township (now Doniphan). When the railroad reached this area it diverted around Mt Hope Hill and shortened its route from five miles to one mile making possible an early settlement at what is now Montezuma Avenue on what became Monterey Road close to where Pottsville once stood. In 1840 Capt James Montgomery moved with his family to this location located approximately three-quarters mile north of their current house on Mount Prospect Road and began operations as a storekeeper/ merchandiser with two horses and one wagon drawn by four donkeys or mules while also working as an overseer of 6 acres of land adjoining the depot site which later became known as “Montgomery Place” In 1845 Captain James Montgomery married Miss Jane Addams who came from Ridgefield Village, Connecticut; they had six children: Elijah (1846-1915), Robert (1848-1924), Clara (1850-1927), Charles W., Anna M., Edwin G., and Margaret P.. Mrs Addams started her own business which she named “Jane Addams Clothing Store” located at 9th & State Streets adjacent to Cook County Jail until her death in 1928 leaving behind an extensive gift giving program that continues to this day On October 11th 1863 Confederate General William Tecumseh Sherman's army crossed over into Illinois between Fulton Dam on the south side of Cahokia River and Brownsburg Junction just west of Present Day Bloomington heights under cover of darkness Movement continued downstream until reaching Streator about 5 am on November 14th when orders were given to retreat Some 7600 men march all night without food or rest arriving within 17 miles at Peoria junction where they camped for 3 days before continuing northeast over snow covered Buffalo Hills finally arrived at Council BluffsNovember 16th when Union general John Pope attacked resulting in Union loss 2200 men killed 10 officers plus many enlisted including Lt Col George Armstrong Custer during battle that took place near Fort Snelling Minnesota
