It was named for General James Montgomery who led Ulysses S. Grant's American Expedition against Mexico City during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After being platted into lots in what are today Randolph Park on July 6, 1854, Montgomerys quickly developed into a small town with an estimated population of 100 residents in 1860 within half a mile of downtown Chicago. By 1870 there were over 1,000 people living here; by 1880 there were 514 residents; by 1900 there were 1,619 residents; and by 1910 there were 2,711 residents. The first post office opened in Montgomery on November 10, 1857; it closed on December 15th due to low mail volumes caused by Indian Wars between Ulysses S. Grant's forces and local Native Americans which had been raging since before settlement began. The first store opened in this community January 12th 1861 at 9 Wacker Drive near present day Randolph Park Elementary School - later known as First National Bank & Trust Company - owned by A C Healey from Milwaukee who also operated an adjacent grocery store across frompresent day First National Bank building located at 5 Wacker Drive NE cornering Washington Blvd., oppositePresent Day McCormick Place Convention Center NE cornering Michigan Ave.. Drury ran this grocery store until 1865 when he sold it to J R McNary who operated it until his death October 24th 1922 - only days after opening his own grocery store next door at 3 Wacker Drive @ once again turning alley frontage into Frazier Avenue now Home Depot Boulevard looking almost exactly like Frazier Avenue before Home Depot built their building acrossribbe
