Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The first permanent settlers in what is now Montgomery were two families from York County, Pennsylvania: the Fordes and the Smiths. In 1802, John Anderson built a log cabin on what is now Cottage Grove Road and named it after himself. By 1806, more families had arrived in what is now Montgomery and began to build homes around the Log Cabin which became known as "Anderson's Corner". In 1824, General Andrew Jackson came through Illinois on his campaign tour and stopped at Anderson's Corner to rest for the night before continuing his journey northward. After his visit, Anderson developed a business relationship with Jackson that lasted until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln terminated the Treaty of Chicago between America and Spain. As a result of this treaty-breaking event (and because of Anderson's connection to General Jackson), he was arrested and tried for treason within days of its signing by a grand jury convened under Lincoln's predecessor James K. Polk. He ultimately received a death sentence but was reprieved due to numerous appeals and eventually died in 1865 at age 81 years old while serving out his remaining prison term at State Penitentiary Springfield, Illinois after beingparoled 11 years earlier than scheduled due to strong public pressure from abolitionists led by Wendel Greene As early as 1830 there were several petitions circulating throughout Montgomery seeking incorporation as an independent village; all were turned down because no one wanted to establish themselves outside of their home town or region where they lived already (). On November 3rd 1832 vote was taken on chartering trustees for new village located plat E #27 & W #41 – laid out into 4 lots = $1 per lot – voted overwhelmingly in favor with post office opened 9/4/1833 (& 1 ½ acres donated by Neely)
