In 1816, voters passed an ordinance establishing school districts which were to serve all citizens regardless of income or residence within one-half mile thereof; these districts would be called "Montgomery Township." A new courthouse was built early in this period and served as both court house and central business district until burned down in 1868 (the building now houses several businesses). On July 1st, 1861 Montgomerie became part of Union Territory following Missouri's secession from the United States; however local government continued to be administered through individual township boards until January 1st following statehood when all township boards were combined into one agency called "Cook County", effective March 15th 1861. This consolidation led to increased taxes due to higher levels of taxation across Cook County instead of within individual townships where residents paid their own way without federal assistance (a situation which still exists today). In 1865–1866 many farmers moved into Montgomery because they could not find good farmland elsewhere in Cook County - especially given that transportation options were limited at that time – resulting in what is now known as rural growth throughout much of Cook County while smaller towns slowly shrunk back into poverty or disappeared completely during this period. Montgomery, Illinois was founded in 1824 and named for General Montgomery, who served as commander of the Northwest Territory during the War of 1812. The village was platted in 1827 and began to grow rapidly due to the production of lumber. In 1848, Montgomery became a town and sawmill owners formed a town board. By 1860, there were over 150 residents in Montgomery and it had a school, post office, church and four taverns. The mills closed in the early 1870s but by 1880 Montgomery had grown to over 1,000 residents with a population center that included two churches and a public library. By 1902 Montgomery had become an incorporated city Limits with its own police department, fire department and schools. In 1916 the city limits were changed to include present-day Montrose Township which annexed portions of neighboring Cumberland Township. During World War II Montgomery became an important supply point for munitions factories in northern Illinois due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Chicago River. After WWII Montrose Township resumed growth as an agricultural community while also becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in north Illinois due to its natural attractions such as rolling hills, lakeshore overlooks and streamsides

In the 1860s, Montgomery became an important transportation center for the area, thanks to its location on the Illinois Central Railroad. The town continued to grow as a result of its position as an agricultural center, and in 1907 it incorporated as a city. By 1930, Montgomery had become one of the largest cities in Illinois.
