The townsite was purchased from the Pecos Indians by David Ransom in 1856. In 1871, John Fritchey bought land south of Montgomery and developed it into what is now downtown Montgomery. The first post office opened in 1870, and today there are several prominent businesses located in downtown Montgomery including Montgomery Ward, JCPenney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Wells Fargo Bank, UPS store and more. The town has been home to many famous people over the years such as actor Robert Mitchum and singer Elton John.

Montgomery is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin metropolitan area. Montgomery's history dates back to 1868 when it was called "Montgomery Township." The township was organized as a village in 1872 and then as a town in 1884. In 1906, Montgomery became part of the city of Chicago; however, Montgomery retained its own governing body until 1959 when that body was merged into the City Council of Chicago. The first settler in what would become Montgomery Township was John Huffman who arrived there on April 12, 1868. Huffman named his new community after General Ulysses S. Grant who had died on April 6th that year at age 58 years old while leading an army against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. On July 15, 1870 surveyors from Cook County completed their plat for what would become Montgomery and submitted it to the Illinois General Assembly for ratification on August 1st which it passed with only one dissenting vote! The first stores were built here by local farmers and construction began on what would eventually become known as "The Town Hall" which served as both courthouse and government center for this newly formed township! By December 1st 1870 all but one family had left because they were landless farmers without any prospects of becoming prosperous through agriculture so they set up shop selling goods door to door around The Town Hall! This initial success led to increased development within the township due to entrepreneurism among its residents! On January 10th 1875 four men - Elijah Houghton, George Willsbury, John Burtch and Daniel Sprague - laid out a new townsite just east of present day Montgomery Creek between Elk Grove Road (now Ottawa Rd) and Elmwood Avenue (now Roosevelt Rd). This location became known as "Downtown" and today marks the border between Montgomery Township proper and neighboring Elgin Township
