At that time it consisted of just a few homes and two stores. In 1860, a post office was established in Montgomery and mail service began from that point on. In 1892-1893 trustees built an addition to the original Sears store which still stands today included within its walls are glass cases filled with rare Stroudsburg shoes dating back to 1927-28 when they were part of Sears’ exhibit at Marshall Park in Chicago. That same year also saw annexation by Rockford Township; however this annexation did not take place until 1912 when General Motors bought out all of the stockholders in Montgomery Village (the name then reverted back to its previous form). In 1923-1924 President Calvin Coolidge made his famous visit to Peoria IL during his Hundred Days’ tour and came through Montverde Mills Shopping Center on October 3rd 1924 while he was stopping at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance plant located adjacent to Winnetka Mall for dinner before going into Peoria for an address by Governor Elmer Rice there on October 5th 24 hours later. After his visit Eisenhower stopped at Montverde Mills again while en route from Peoria back home via Armour World Headquarters located adjacent Beltline Expressway where he met corporate executives from GM plants across America prior to giving testimony before Congress about their plans for American industry during his last 2 years as president
