Montgomery is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,812 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is the largest suburb of Chicago. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montgomery was founded in 1848 as a community on an agricultural farm near what is now Skokie and has since grown to become one of the most affluent suburbs of Chicago. The original part of Montgomery was located on land that today includes much of Montrose and parts of Addison Park and Oak Lawn neighborhoods. The city's first mayor, George Washington Morrison, who also served as its first postmaster general, died in office before he could be elected to a full term due to termlimits set by then-Mayor John Altgeld. In 1853, Mayor Morrison appointed James Hickey as his replacement and Hickey served until 1858 when he resigned after being impeached for bribery. From 1858 until 1860, Mayor Morrisons' second appointee was John Prentice who later became County Treasurer during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1861 Prentice unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Altgeld but did serve as City Marshal from 1863 to 1865 when Altgeld retired from office following his successful run for Governor of Illinois against Ulysses S. Grant (1868-71). After Altgeld's election as governor in 1871 and his inauguration on January 6th following his inauguration day (January 3rd in modern day America), Montgomery's first African American mayor Harry Payne Whitney served from July 1st 1870 until May 10th 1880 when Whitney resigned due to health concerns about running for reelection after only two years on the job; Montgomery had not yet achieved racial integration due to persistent white opposition which continued up through well into the 1920s%. With Capone’s rise to power beginning with Prohibition Enforcement Act 1919 led by Assistant Public Prosecutor Angelo Magliano – known thereafter as “the boss” – corruption within law enforcement began becoming more rampant throughout organized crime syndicates throughout North America culminating with federal prosecution under Magliano’s successor Joseph Jastrow starting with early 1930s prohibition prosecutions dubbed “Operation Mongoose”; this eventually led ultimately to Jastrow’s conviction and imprisonment leading directly theretofore unprecedented levels of public exposure including self-incrimination by top officials connected with organized crime rings around North America including some within Chicago government – thus resulting indirectly incriminating many current heads or top managers within major metropolitan areas across North America aware or complicit with serious criminality prior thereto leaving little opportunity whatsoever for cover or concealment thereafter once contact/cooperation commenced notwithstanding repeated denials by senior officials aforesaid during periods subsequent thereto); finally reaching its peak during late 1940s/early 1950s period leading ultimately ultimate political downfall thereof consequent therewith both nationally televised capitol hearings featuring high ranking members etc., exposing deep state conspiracy etc., among other matters thereby resulting in eventual impeachment proceedings preceding their final outcome whereby President Dwight D Eisenhower ultimately terminated such proceedings nationwide effective January 20th 1953 pursuant To section 5(a) 2nd Amendment Protection Act 1948.)

In 1862, Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Montgomery on his way to battle General Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. As part of Grant's army, Montgomery played a significant role during the Battle of Gettysburg. After the battle, Union troops burned down all of Montgomery's buildings including the stores and schools before withdrawing back into Pennsylvania. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes but some stayed behind to start new businesses such as hotels and grocery stores. The population continued to grow until it reached its current level of around 3000 people by 1970.Today, Montgomery is still home to a large number of residents who continue their traditions of agriculture and business success
