In 1838, John James Audubon designed and patented the first truly waterproof binocular. The Audubon model was able to provide clear images even when wet. By the early 20th century, binoculars had become increasingly popular for both amateur and professional use, as they provided an excellent view from any angle. Binoculars continued to be popular until the advent of television in the 1960s.

Moline is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 22,821 as of the 2010 census. Moline is the third-largest city in the state after Chicago and Springfield. It is also one of the most populous cities in Illinois. Moline was founded on August 29, 1853, by John Pemberton and his brothersnorthwest of present-day Chicago. The Pembertons were farmers who had emigrated from Ireland. The town originally consisted of only buildings around the corner from where they lived and a few miles east of their farmstead. In 1874, when Donelson County was organized into districts, Moline became part of District 2 which included all of Cook County north to Grayslake and all of Kane County east to Rockford; it remained an part of District 2 until its abolition in 1961. The city's first courthouse was built on State Street at what is now Wabash Avenue in 1857; it burned down in 1865. A new courthouse was built at Eighth Street and Jackson Avenue in 1870; it burned down again two years later but was replaced by a third courthouse, located at Seventh Street and Jackson Avenue, which still stands today. The fourth courthouse (which still stands) opened on Elmira Place northwest of downtown Moline on November 1, 1907; it served as the county seat for Cook County until 1959 when that office moved to Chicago due to expense concerns surrounding then-new county boundaries. On October 14, 1960–one week before City Hall moved to downtown –Moline voters approved an ordinance creating its own City Hall building located southeast corner First Avenue/Jackson Boulevard within blocks northeast of current City Hall site; this building served as both City Hall until 1962 when Mayor Harry Bailey dissolved the City Council effective December 1st because he felt that more centralized government control would be better suited for Moline than what Baker had put into place two years earlier while Councilman Garfield Buell presided over Council meetings inside City Hall). On July 20th 1966—more than four decades after incorporation—the first vote ever taken outside the Municipal Election Committee limits took place when citizens passing through North Park voted against annexation by Joliet Township along with a majority voice cast against annexation by any municipality other than Evanston Township whose residents supported annexation because Joliet Township offered them more services including high school football games played right next door to their park! Moline is located in the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and is east of downtown Chicago. It lies on the southern border of Rockford Township and west of Mattoon Township. Moline began as a small farming community known for its corn crop production. In 1871, George Halsted organized the town's first white school district and built a general store there. By 1888, Moline had two churches, four businesses, and 100 residents. By 1912, Moline had more than 1,200 residents and a post office. The town's growth accelerated during World War I when it became an important munitions plant for the war effort; during World War II it became an important Boeing assembly plant. However, after the war ended in 1945–46, Moline declined rapidly due to high levels of economic decline in Illinois during that period. In 1971, President Nixon announced plans to reduce America's federal government by 1% each year through 1975; as a result of this announcement, many businesses closed down throughout Illinois due to automation and new technology changes which impacted manufacturing industries such as those employed by IBM at nearby Waukegan (later DuPage). Moline was founded by a small group of farmers in 1837 as a railroad town and has been an important center for industry and commerce since its founding. Moline's rich history begins with its location on the Mississippi River just downstream from what is today Dubuque, Iowa. When settlers arrived in 1837, they needed a place to store their crops and build their homes so that they could continue farming during winter months. They chose Moline because it was close to the tracks running through the area, making it easy for them to get goods and supplies from east to west. The first people who lived in Moline were farmers who had relocated from nearby Waterloo, Illinois. For many years, this was the only community in Walworth County; however, over time other towns began to develop around Moline as businesses grew established there or new factories opened up along the riverfront. The primary industries which thrived throughout much of Moline's early years were transportation: railroads came through Moline frequently and made it easy for goods to be shipped quickly between different parts of America; moreover, shipping companies often built docks next door to allow goods trains access both directly into downtown Moline and outbound trains going away from town – this allowed for very fast movement of materials across large distances during those days! Other primary industries during these early years included agriculture: local farmers grew corn, wheat, soybeans and other vegetables; meat production originated here as well with chickens being raised on farms until about 1920 when pigs were introduced into the mix!
