Mokena, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois. It is located on the banks of the Missouri River, about 30 miles south of Chicago. At the time of the 2010 census, Mokena had a population of 7,824. The name "Mokena" comes from the Ojibwe word Medicineka meaning “the place where we gather our berries” and “water stop on way to Wichita”. The first Europeans to visit Mokena were French traders in 1679. A post office was established in 1868, and mail was received from St. Louis until 1926. In 1907-1908, an electric streetcar line was built that connected Mokena with Indianola and other nearby towns. In 1916, General Motors opened its plant in what is now downtown Mokena; it would become one of GM's largest suppliers in rural America. The plant processed agricultural products such as corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat for local markets before becoming known for manufacturing cars and trucks.GM closed its plants throughout suburban Detroit by 2000; however, some remnants remain: the old production building still stands next to I-60 east of downtown Mokena; and Cadillac Park remains open as an auto mall today

In 1985, two young men who had been living on a farm near Mokena discovered oil reserves that would later become known as Shell Oil Company's Kettle Moraine field. With the help of then-Senator Rick Durbin (D-IL), President Ronald Reagan approved the development of what became known as Shellmae Subdivision; additional land was acquired through various sales over time until all but a fraction of the total acreage had been developed when Iowan entrepreneur Harold Hamm purchased most of it from Shell Oil Co., renamed it Continental Resources Corporation, and began developing it into one of shale gas country's biggest energy sources. The townsite now lies within Marathon Gas' production zone for natural gas liquids production adjacent to their encountered methane fields which are also used to generate electricity for local homes Today there are more than 1,000 people living here fulltime or part-time with businesses located throughout town including restaurants/bars/cafes/video game stores etc... making many services available without leaving their homes
