Mokena is a city in the far northwest corner of Illinois, on the border of Michigan and Wisconsin. It was founded in 1854 by Swedish immigrants, and became a major center for iron ore mining and manufacturing. The city has grown rapidly since World War II, thanks to its location near the now-defunct Keweenaw Peninsula iron mine. Mokena is home to both United States Air Force Base McGuire (KEW4Y) and United States Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton (CN9W). The Keweenaw Peninsula Iron Mine closed in 1984, but remains an important part of Mokena's history.

In 1881, a group of entrepreneurs in Mokena, Illinois, started the First National Bank. The first bank was built on Pershing Street and operated until 1907. In 1892, the First National Bank moved to its present location on West State Street. The bank became one of the largest banks in the Midwest. In 1907, it merged with the Mechanics and Farmers National Bank of Chicago to form the United States National Bank. The United States National Banks were renamed American Banks in 1971 and again in 2008 when they merged with Wells Fargo & Co.
Mokena is a small community in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. The Mokena Bridge is a lift bridge that crosses the river Ganges into India. The village of Mokena was founded in 1871 by German immigrants and grew up around the Mokena Ferry Terminal on the Chicago River. In 1926, it merged with the then-small town of West Dundee to form Mokena-West Dundee Township. In 1970, voters approved amendments to their municipal charter which gave them full city status. That year, they also became members of the Illinois Federation of Municipalities and are now considered a metropolitan area with its own mayor and city council. Mokena has been home to many businesses and families since its founding including Ford Motor Company (1901), Armour Rubber Co., White Sulphur Minerals (1937–1945), Pepsi Cola Bottling Works (1966), US Airways (1970s), McCormick & Company (1973–1988) and Carbide Industries Incorporated (1987). Today it boasts several professional sports teams as well as a thriving arts scene with numerous local galleries, museums and music venues.

Mokena, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Mokena is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and has been a community since 1872. In 1892, Mokena became an independent city under the name of South Bend. On March 15, 1907, South Bend was merged with Mokena to form a new city called Mokena-South Bend which had 4,000 residents. The original right-of-way for US Highway 41 through Mokena was donated by John Atherton in 1912 and remains in use today as Rte 41A (southbound). The first post office opened in 1872 and operated until 1886. The first store in Mokena was built on Elm Street just east of present day First Avenue between White and Maple Streets. This store served as the nucleus around which development took place; it remained open until it burned down in 1901. A second store opened on Main Street east of present day First Avenue about one mile from where the first store stood; this store operated until 1918 when it too burned down. In 1892, Makena became an independent city under the name of South Bend when its citizens voted to secede from Kane County after disagreements over Taxes and other local issues caused by agriculture depression during the 1890s. When Kane County decided that South Bend would become part of their larger jurisdiction they renamed it "Makena" after American Indian chief Mahonek who lived near contemporary Kankakee Island off southern Indiana coast at that time – making him also one of few people known worldwide for his experiences living on what is now Northwestern Illinois coastline during this time period! The City Council established aweak central government with Mayor Wm Hargrave being responsible for all aspects external to City Hall including finance and law enforcement while Mayor Wm Price controlled internal affairs within City limits subject only to veto by Councilmembers/Mayor Price himself without individual vote or appeal! This system worked well until 1906 when Mayor Price resigned effective February 1st due to health problems brought about by cancer treatment he had undergone earlier that year – leaving open question as to who would control City Hall going forward should another mayor be elected concurrently with newly formed Cook County! 2 years later (November 8th) another mayoral election resulted in Mayor Geo Fuhrman becoming solemnly accountable for all aspects withinCity Limits subject only to veto byCouncilMembers/Mayor Fuhrman himself without individual vote or appeal thru Decisions made thru Committees headed up jointly w/ him & otherCouncil Members!!! After two terms w/ no mayoral elections scheduled due largely because there seemed little need given then current Councillors were fully capable w/government responsibilities (& many more ex-KaneCounty Officials NOW living outside our borders) we experienced our first municipal uprising starting January 19th 1914 thru April 17th 1915!!!!!! Our valiant citizens fought tooth & nail against any attempt by outsiders whatsoever (& even some members of our own leadership felt Verdun had already won before hand!) finally prevailing w’ ll never forget what we went through!!!!!!!!!
