Mokena Rifle & Pistol Club members frequently did duty as volunteer firemen in their town during the post World War I years when there were no regular firefighters available. Many of these men served in World War II as well when hostilities began in Europe. In 1951, the club merged with the Illinois Gunsmiths Association to form the National Shooting Sports Foundation Incorporated ().

Mokena, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mokena is named after an Ojibwe word meaning " bundles of corn." The first European to visit Mokena was French explorers in 1724 and 1725. In 1812, General James K. Polk founded a military post called Fort Dearborn on the east side of Mokena Creek as part of his conflicts with Great Britain over control of Northwest Territory. In 1813, President James K. Polk established a government for all the territory west of the Mississippi River and south of Lake Michigan under name United States Territory No. 8 (now Kansas). On July 1, 1814, Mokena became part of this new territories and it was formally incorporated as a village on December 15, 1814 by Commissioners Auld and Healey from Belleville Township in Cook County. The village had two stores and four homes when it incorporated—one store occupied by George Hinkle and three homes were rented out to farmers for agricultural use only until they could be purchased or built more permanent quarters; also within years there were several churches (Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1815-16; Baptist Church built in 1830; First Congregationalist Church built in 1830), schools (Makena Academy opened May 1st 1829; Peoria Female Seminary opened September 6th 1850), dance hall (Fenton’s Hotel opened November 12th 1840), blacksmith shop (Samuel Fenton opened October 25th 1840) and sawmill (Reuben Dearing started operations February 3rd 1841). A lumberyard operated from about 1840-1845 along Elm Street near present day State Street/Milwaukee Avenue North before becoming fully known as J & W Lumber Company which closed circa 1965 due to competition from other companies such as Wisconsin Timber Supply Company
