It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is home to Missouri Pacific Railroad's Mokena Yard, which is located on the east side of town. The first Europeans to visit Mokena were French fur traders in 1678-79. The first European settler in what would become Mokena was James Auchinleck, who arrived in 1786 with his family from County Antrim, Ireland. Auchinleck named his land "Mokeenawa", meaning "place where you can see bear". In 1831, John Tilton donated 640 acres (246 hectares) of land to the village for $10 per acre ($=$). In 1836, Amasa Lester bought 640 acres (246 hectares) from John Tilton for $10 per acre ($=$). With this purchase, Lester became one of the earliest landowners in what would become Mokena. He used some of the money he received to build a house and store on land that he donated to the village as well as another house for use as a schoolhouse and garage. Lester died in 1870 and bequeathed his property to the village for use as a public square/town square or reservatory ground for future growth within Mokena Township or any other township within St Louis County or any other country without its own public square/town square therein - Provided it be not dedicated exclusively or primarily to private purposes or uses exclusive thereto; Provided further That no part thereof shall be taken up by way of real estate development but left open for public exhibition as an open spaceities inviting public use... This reservation became known as Lester Park after him... In 1907 Amasa Buell Larsen donated 320 acres (116 hectares), including all that now makes up today's Village Square lot on East State Street between Third and Fourth Streets extending from South Third Street southward along State Road 3W across Third Street into Seventh Avenue eastward thence northerly along Seventh Avenue northward past First Street into Eighth Avenue westward thence southerly along Eighth Avenue eastward past Second Street into Ninth Avenue westward thence northerly along Ninth Avenue southwards... In 1916 Clyde Davenport offered 428 acres (158 hectares), including what now makes up North Park Drive between East Tenth Street and West 11thStreet cornering North Park Drive about midway between those two streets - this offer became known as Davenport Heights after him... In 1927 Virgil Olson offered 464 acres (222 hectares), including all that now makes up Today's Village Square lot on East State Street between Third and Fourth Streets extending from South ThirdStreet southward along State Road 3W across ThirdStreet into Seventh avenue eastward thence northerly along Seventh avenue northward past First street into Eighth avenue westWARD THEN EAST STREET UP TO NORTH PARK DRIVE IN THE WEST END OF TODAY'S VILLAGE SQUARE WHERE IT CONNECTS WITH EAST 10TH STREET Also offered was an additional 653acre (267 hectare) lot lying NEARLY SOUTHEASTERNLY OF TODAY'S VILLAGE SQUARE BETWEEN HIGHWAY 32 AND STATE ROAD 309 BETWEEN US HIGHWAYS 38 & 59 ALSO INCLUDING ALL THAT NOW MAKE UP TODAY'S GARDENS ADDITIONAL LAND WAS OFFERED BUT NOT ACCEPTED BY THE COUNCIL

Mokena was founded on April 1, 1868 by Nicholas Biddle. On November 5, 1879, Mokena became a village under the authority of Kane County. On November 3rd, 1902 it became an incorporated town. On December 15th, 1907 it became a city when it received its charter from the state of Illinois.
