Mokena is the only incorporated city in Putnam County. Mokena's roots go back to 1853 when John A. Mokena and AnnaMaria founded the town of Makena on a tract of land they had purchased from the Sac&Creek Nation. The village grew rapidly, reaching its peak during World War II when it housed up to 1,500 military personnel and their families. After the war, however, Mokena declined as a result of rapid population growth and decline in agricultural production; consequently, many businesses closed or moved away over time. In recent years though, numerous new businesses have opened up in Mokena – including two churches (St Joseph’s Catholic Church and Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran) as well as an arts district that includes several galleries and restaurants. The community has also become known for its annual "Fiesta" festival which features music, events throughout the weekend including carnival games and food booths for participants., fireworks shows on Saturday night & Sunday morning (the largest such show in Illinois), Trick or Treat sessions on Friday & Saturday nights (during which children are allowed to wander around local businesses while parents take them home for dinner), as well as a parade every year on Christmas Eve morning

By 1851, there were over 100 residents living in Makena. By 1865, however, only 10 people lived in Makena and most of these had relocated from other settlements along the riverbank. The early years of Mokena's growth were difficult due to lack of natural resources and economic challenges that arose from America's involvement in both World Wars I and II (1914-18). Despite this difficulty, Makena slowly emerged as one of America’s leading agricultural communities during these years. In 1916, Mayor John Fenton declared that "Makena has become an American Town." This statement reflected how much progress Makena had made since its early days as an agricultural community striving for distinction among similar towns throughout America. However, despite its accomplishments during these years – including becoming one ofAmerica’s largest municipalities – Milwaukee refused to recognize Makena’s municipal status on religious grounds because it considered itself “the seat or capital city” for all Illinois villages located within 1 mile (2 km) thereof (Milwaukee v City Council 116 Ill 2d 539 [1916]). Despite this obstacle course set by Milwaukee, which effectively stopped any further growth atMakenA until after World War II -MokinAsocial fabric gradually developed which allowed local businesses and citizens to come together under one banner; eventually resultingin increased economic activity and stability that has continued into today
