Minooka is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Minooka is part of the Peoria, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Minooka-based company MBIA Corporation was founded by three brothers in 1865 and became one of the largest mortgage lenders in America. The history of Minooka goes back to 1837 when James Fenton established a store and post office here. In 1851, John Aiken built a gristmill on what is now Main Street. In 1863, George Waddell established a blacksmith shop on land that he donated to the town. By 1870, the town had a school and several businesses including an hotel and grocery store. In 1880, Jnoah Kittredge purchased land east of Main Street from Fenton for $2 million which formed the nucleus of today's cityscape. In 1886, David Littell opened his first restaurant in what is now known as Kittredge Park (now home to Central High School). That same year saw the opening of the first water tower in Sangamon County and it would be another two decades before central heating devices were even available in homes! In 1902, lumber baron James Prentice moved his operations from Chicago to Minooka after purchasing 8 miles (13 km) of forested ridgeline north of Peoria for $1 million dollars! That same year also saw MinOOKA become one of eighteen townships within Sangamon County when it was created following statehood proceedings.. On October 3rd 1906 citizens voted 5-1 to annex into Union City due to growing dissatisfaction with its lack of political representation! However this annexation never happened as Union City withdrew their application citing financial reasons.. In 1928 Arthur Hogue reopened his Bicknell’s restaurant which quickly became popular among locals because they offered Happy Hour drinks all day long! The popularity of Hogue’s led him eventually to open his own restaurant chain here until his death in 1984; Gourmet Grill still remains open today as one local favorite institution! Over time many other restaurants have cropped up such as Old Country Store & Tavern which closed its doors but continues operation as a general store today; Moe’s BBQ & Burger Joint where you can still enjoy traditional American cuisine; KFC;; etc.; making MinOOKA an inviting place for food lovers from all corners Of THE USA!!!
