On July 14, 1922, a group of men from Minooka, Illinois set out to build a new shooting range. The range would become known as the "Minooka Rifle Range" and it would be used by many shooters over the years. The first shooters at the Minooka Rifle Range were local farmers and their sons. They used shotguns and rifles for target practice. In 1923, a man by the name of Eugene Stoner set up shop onsite and began selling earmuffs to shooters. Earmuffs became popular among shooters because they provided hearing protection during shootouts or other gunfire incidents. Earmuffs were also worn while fishing or hunting in order to avoid getting sound echoes off of rocks or trees. Minooka is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It lies approximately south of the city of Chicago. The population was 2,958 at the 2000 census. The name Minooka comes from the Ojibwa word "mīnokwā" meaning "a small place." The first settler in Minooka was John Atherton who arrived in 1839. After a few years he sold his land to Colonel James Cook and moved his family to what is now Kane County. Captain David Houghton also arrived in 1841 and started homesteading near present-day Minooka. In 1847 John Ewing came across a piece of land that would eventually become Minooka Township. He purchased the land from Captain Houghton and founded the village on November 25, 1847 with twenty-eight settlers. Benedict Arnold built an army camp here during the American Civil War which resulted in many casualties among both sides including four residents killed by cannon fire on October 24, 1860 while supplies were being unloaded at Wabash River Fortification Park just north of town. This event is remembered through annual memorial services held at nearby Mount Carmel Cemetery honoring those lost during that conflict as well as local citizens who died or were injured while serving their country elsewhere during that time period In 1949 MinOOKA SCHOOL DISTRICT opened its doors to students grades K-8th inclusive after years of planning by Mrs.. Norma Weems (1896-1984). With such an impressive beginning it can be said that Mrs Weems helped shape today’s school districts landscape within these boundaries! Unfortunately Mrs Weems passed away without her namesake ever having had an opportunity to see her namesake’s pupils participate in all aspects of our daycare program! Today we continue this legacy with Mrs Teresa Ladd (1948-present) taking charge as operations manager for PreKindergarten thru 8th grade! Thank you for your support over the years!!

In 1912, the town was renamed after General George Buell. In 1955, Minooka became an unincorporated community within Decatur County. As of 2010, it had a population of 544 people. The townsite at what is now Minooka was first settled by farmers who arrived in 1827 from England. They named their new settlement after General George Buell—the Union general who fought in the Mexican-American War and won an Oscar for his actions during that conflict. The original settlers were mostly Englishmen with some Irish colonists also living in the area at that time. The early years of the township were difficult; many of the men died from smallpox contracted while traveling to find new land or fighting in the war against Mexico. In 1830, MinOOKA WOODS GEOGRAPHY & HISTORY Abridged from: "Minooka Township History" (1830) In 1871 when Decatur annexed MINOOKA TOWNSHIP into DECATUR COUNTY,MINOOKA lost much of its growth due to lack of access to water resources which made farming more challenging than ever before." According to historian John Fenton this was because "Decatur lacked any major rivers or canals providing irrigation water for agriculture; instead it relied on wells dug deep below ground". With less access to water resources came increased competition among settlers for limited acreage and jobs available on less fertile land close to larger towns like Chicago and Stauntonburg). Consequently, as MINOOKA declined economically throughout most of the 20th century there was little development taking place within its boundaries." As recently as 1955 however things began To change with plans announced by then Governor Richard Mclntyre which called for DECATUR COUNTY TO SEPARATE FROM ILLINOIS CENTRAL REGION IN ORDER TO BETTER SUPPORT INDUSTRIALdevelopment pockets closer to Chicago while keeping MINOOKA intact as an unincorporated community within Decatur County."This move towards economic development coincided with DECATUR's increasing awareness about Chicagos growing role as a regional center following World War II."Accordingly efforts are currently underway by DECATUR officials including Mayor Rick Lissauer and Vice Mayor Tom Schaeferto bring back significant portions ofminOOKA's history through renovations and restoration projects" .

The city of Minooka was founded in 1855 by a group of farmers who came from the nearby town of Blackburn. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Illinois River, and by 1869 it had reached a population of 350 people. In 1902, Minooka became a part of the new county of Cook County.
