Minooka is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town of Minooka was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Smith and his family as a small village on the south side of the Chicago River. The first post office opened in 1837 and was called "Smithville." In 1840, Minooka became an incorporated town and had a population of about 150 people. In 1848, Minooka became one of fourteen townships in Cook County that were organized into districts named after scenic points along the Illinois River (Wabash Valley District No. 1; DeKalb Valley District No. 2; North Side District No. 3; South Side District No. 4). The first president of each district was John Smeaton with James Blythe as secretary general. In 1850, residents voted to remove from the township form their homes on what is now Wabash Avenue and build them closer to downtown Chicago so that they could better participate in local government activities and enjoy more amenities such as schools, churches, hospitals and parks within walking distance or less than two hours' drive from their homes. On January 25, 1861 – only days before Abraham Lincoln won his election as President – citizens of Minooka met to adopt resolutions asking for secession from Illinois because they felt that their rights were being violated by state authorities ( Bloomington Union Republican , January 26). On March 15th during a meeting called to consider petitions for secession which had been brought forward by various business interests throughout central Illinois including merchants living on the north side near State Street junction with Washington Street & Michigan Avenue (now Orchard Road), representatives fromminOOKA drafted Resolution #2/5establishing our right to secede if we did not feel our violations were corrected) At this meeting it was decided that we should secede because our grievances have been ignored by state authorities’ continued treatment of us” (from “History Of MINOOKA IL” accessed December 5th 2016). After much discussion it was decided that all property within boundaries defined below would be annexed into Chicagoland just like neighboring communities such as Evanston Township & Joliet Township which had also seceded months earlier without any protest or notification from our government officials

Minooka is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Minooka was platted on November 3, 1871 by James Ewing and his brother-in-law George Stephenson as a location for a post office. The name "Minooka" might be derived from the Ojibwe word "nimchaki", meaning "place where many people gathering." In 1898, Minooka became the first village in Cook County to adopt a school board form of government with one member elected at large and five members selected through township voting districts. In 1902, the village renamed itself after General John Pershing's brigade that fought in World War I on the Western Front. In 1922–23, when Cook County was divided into four districts (northwest collarland, northwest side; central collarland, central side; south Side Loop; and east Side Loop), Minooka lost its status as an unincorporated community because it formed part of each district's southern boundary. However, it continued to be listed in local directories until 1934 when it merged with neighboring Grove City to form what is now known as Grove City-Minooka Township. The Village of MinOOKA Incorporation papers were filed with Clerk of Court Chasity Ahern on November 3rd 1871 during the proceedings leading up to James Ewing incorporation as a Village located near Bloomington IL which took place on December 6th 1871 just prior to becoming an incorporated Village under Act No.: 186 Of March 9th 1870 With all said documents annexed together this document being called MINOOKA INCORPORATION DATED NOVEMBER 3RD 1871 . After making history becoming America’s firstVillage formed from 2 townships only 2 miles apart we quickly went from strength to strength taking advantage of promotional material provided by our President Abraham Lincoln himself who stated “When two villages are amalgamated their interests will become very similar and they will work better together than either would do alone”
