Minooka is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The Minooka post office was founded in 1872 and has been in operation since 1865. The community is named after the small village of Nokomis, Wisconsin. The first settler in Minooka was James Waugh who arrived on July 5, 1872 from Hardwick Township, Minnesota. Waugh built a cabin on a peninsula near the present day town center and named it Nokomis for his Native American heritage. In 1915 fourteen-year old John Fenton took possession of what is now the Fenton Store and began to serve as the lead storekeeper for all of central McHenry County. In 1925 John Fenton's son Harry became manager of the store which then continued under his own management until its sale to Lester Kapp in 1978. Mr. Kapp also operated a feed lot adjacent to the store until 1984 when he sold it to Ray McNally who put it into use as an agricultural farm known today as McNally Farms Incorporated.. This family-owned business served Minooka residents until 2002 when they sold it to Midwest Natural Foods Corporation who continue to operate it currently as "McDonald's" local restaurant/cafeteria chain
