Minooka, Illinois (population: 3,812) is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,765 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was first settled by Germans in 1847 and named after Minooka Creek which flows through it. The name was changed to Minooka in 1872 when it became part of the new state of Illinois. In 1912, the town was annexed by Joliet Township and became part of that township's jurisdiction. In 1937, Minooka merged with Terre Haute to form a single city-county called Terre Haute-Minooka. The city-county went into receivership status on July 1, 2009 and came out of bankruptcy on November 15, 2013. On December 20th Mayor John Beck announced that the merger would not be accepted because "the City Council determined there were too many overlapping services and programs" within the merged entity and that "the City budget could not support both agencies."
Minooka is located in southern Illinois and has been a community since the 1840s. The community was named after a small Indian village in what is now Michigan. In 1847, the United States Post Office was established at Minooka, and it remained operational until 1959. In 1925, the first high school in Minooka opened its doors to students. The first post office closed in 1959 because of budget cuts. Today, there are only two schools in the community: a junior high school and an elementary school.
