The village of Minooka, Illinois is located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 1,651. It was founded in 1871 by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife Anna Bellefontaine Forrest. The community was named for John C. Minooka, one of Forrest's cavalry officers during the American Civil War. Minooka has a post office with ZIP code 61562 and a public school system with six schools: one Grades K-12th; one PreK-8th; three middle schools (grades 9-12); and one high school (grades 10-12). The village also has a library with an operating budget of $2 million and two grocery stores: One anchors Main Street and is called "The Grocery Mart", while another anchor West Side Road. In 2013, voters passed an ordinance allowing all businesses within the village to open up 24/7 for customers when they are not closed for maintenance or lunchtime services. In addition to its namesake general and Mrs. Forrest, other notable people from Minooka include Dr. Jerald Fenton (founder of American Memory Museum), Judge Roy Bean (the first black judge on Lake County's circuit court), Dick Cheney's father Neil Atherton Cheney (the son of former Vice President George H.W.] Cheney who served as Mayor of Minooka from 1984 through 1992, Don Frye (creator/executive producer/director/founder/CEO - iHeartRadio) who grew up in Minooka before moving to Chicago in 2006 where he started his own media company known as Tribune Broadcasting Company until his death in 2016 at age 95 years old, Dan Quayle Jr.'s father Dan Quayle Sr., current Mayor Tom Crossman and many more residents that have made their mark on this small but vibrant community!

The village's current name comes from its location on the Missouri River between Minooka and Streator."
The village of Minooka was incorporated in 1855. The first white settler in the area, Dr. Nicholas Fenton, arrived in 1857 and built a cabin on the current site of the village. In 1861, a school was organized and operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1898, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway (CRIP) came through Minooka and started using it as a terminal for their trains coming from Illinois down to Dodge City. The village quickly grew around this service and soon became an important town within CRIP's network. The CRIP closed its tracks along Minooka Drive in 1986 and most of its terminals were destroyed over time. However, some elements of the station remain today - including an old ticket booth that is now used as a library!
