Minooka is a small town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,537 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quincy-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Minooka comes from "Mocoa", one of the three Ojibwe villages that made up the Mississippian culture. Mocoa was located on a bend in the river where it emptied into the Des Plaines River. The other two villages were Oneida and Wabash. The first European to visit Minooka was French trader and explorer François Jourdain in 1679 during his trip downstream from Chicago through what is now Iowa Territory. He named a creek after its location, Mocoa Creek. In 1848, Abraham Lincoln visited MinOOKA while he was campaigning for president and donated land to be used as a public school district in that year's election campaign. In 1860, when Confederate forces invaded Missouri and invaded Illinois, they destroyed several homes near present-day MinOOKA on private lands owned by some of the local settlers including Abraham Lincoln's father-in-law John Todd Lincoln (1814–1881). On April 12th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Camp Douglas outside of Quincy with 3 divisions of 50000 men only to find that all but 2500 men had already deserted because they were afraid of being captured or killed if they returned home under Union command; this event became known as 'the retreat'. There are still some old trees near Camp Douglas where Union troops burned them down during their retreat from Quincy on April 12th 1865; those trees still stand today as an advertising billboard for campgrounds within driving distance of Camp Douglas which can be seen from Interstate 95 southbound Exit #5 just past Rockford Park Road (I-95/US 41), exit #6 eastbound exit onto I- Highway 71 North about 2 miles north of town limits

Minooka is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Minooka is located in the northwestern corner of the county and borders Rockford to the north and Northwest Indiana to the east. The first settler in what is now Minooka was John White in 1824. A post office called Minooka was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first store at Minooka opened on April 5, 1839. The town became a village on December 1, 1907. In 1912 the name of the town was changed from "Minchona" to "Minooka". On February 14, 1916 (the date of World War I), during World War I there were many skirmishes near MinOOKA between American forces and German troops; one resulting in three killed and nine wounded residents as well as damage to several businesses including a grocery store that collapsed Hours after this skirmish occurred a large bomb exploded near Rockford injuring 10 people In total over 100 buildings were damaged or destroyed by bombs during WWI throughout Cook County
The town of Minooka, Illinois was founded in 1836 by farmers who arrived from New England. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1854, the town became the seat of government for the Township of Minooka. In 1870, the township merged with the village of Minooka to form the present-day city of Minooka.
