The town was founded on November 6, 1837 by Captain John Nolen and fifty-six other men who had deserted from the U.S. Army under General Winfield Scott's orders in the Mexican–American War. They named their new township after Mount Rushmore national park in Colorado where they were resting for the winter before continuing their journey eastward to join General Santa Anna's army besieging Mexico City. In 1844, Judge Augustus Kelley organized a school district which included present-day Minooka Township as well as portions of Evanston and Cicero townships north of Lake Michigan. In 1852, a post office was established at Minooka with James Kinsey as its first mail carrier; it remained in operation until 1976 when it was transferred to Park Ridge (northwest Chicago). The town prospered through the late 1800s thanks to heavy cotton production and trade with nearby Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; Pascagoula, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; and points south along Interstate 65 bisecting Illinois and Indiana.
