The Whitakers became wellknown for their cannons and rifles, which fired balls of different sizes out of cannons or rifle barrels. Barrel-makers’ iron was originally used to make cannonballs, small shots (such as pistols), or artillery rounds. By 1860, many other towns had emerged as majorgunsmithing centers in the Midwest due to advances in technology and production methods. In Minooka, manufacturer John Sutter began making rifles using barrel-makers’ iron in 1871. John Sutter was an important figure in American arms development because he developed the first successful breechloading rifle—the Winchester Model 1873—in 1872. This weapon allowed soldiers to fires rounds directly from the muzzle instead of having to reload each time they fired a weapon

Minooka is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 771 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants as a farmstead on the edge of what is now Minooka Lake. The name came from the Ojibwe word "nokka". In 1901, a post office called Minooka was established, and remained in operation until it closed in 1957. The first settler to arrive in Minooka was Ole Hanson on July 4, 1872. From his farmstead just east of present-day Minooka Elementary School began developing what would become today's town center (and village) with only two buildings remaining standing when it incorporated as a village in 1906: an old gristmill and Mrs. Hanson's log cabin which still stands to this day off State Route 40 just north of Village Hall). A few years later, another Norwegian immigrant named John Haugland acquired land adjacent to where he lived for farming purposes before eventually moving into the community full time and starting his own business - The Haugland Store - which operated until 1922. At that time, all businesses within walking distance were combined under one roof so customers could get their goods directly from the storekeeper or carry them home on their shopping carts! Of course during prohibition era things didn't quite work out that way... After hours sales were limited to beer and cigarettes only! In 1907 Captain George Kappenberger arrived with his family who had travelled downriver from St Pauls Falls Michigan near Chicago via steamboat landing at Rockford Lock & Dam - Venture Point - disembarking at Killbuck Landing opposite present day Killbuck Road/State Route 180 about midway between Rockford and Peoria (the original homestead site for Harmon Airport). He started a sawmill and built several homes including one known as "Kappenberger Manor" still standing today alongside Kappenberger Boulevard just south of Village Hall), which remains one of only two structures remaining from those early days within minutes' walk of current day Village Hall Carpet Store (which opened its doors in 1912)! In 1916 Captain Kappenberger’s wife died suddenly young leaving him with 3 children aged 10-12 years; however due to market conditions resultant hardships experienced by many farmers during World War I (& ensuing depression),Captain Kappenberger managed to sell most all his assets & immigrate back upriver to America where he successfully ran a restaurant (& tavern) for many years before retiring finally located permanentlyin Cook County Illinois since 1995.) By 1926 there were over 100 residents living in MinOOKA! On February 27th 1928 citizens adopted a new Municipal Charter providing for educational opportunities for nonstock citizens not owned by organized school districts; also pledging support for local agricultural programs...Many people may be familiar with names such as Driscoll (1909-1976), Barton (1920-2002), Foley (1927-2005) etc., but few realize that these individuals have played significant roles within our Community History!
