The history of the Minooka Rifle and Pistol Club began in 1899 when two men, J.B. Snider and W.C. Goodwin, decided to form a rifle and pistol club in order to improve their skills at shooting. The Minooka Rifle and Pistol Club met monthly for the first few years until it became an annual event in 1902. In 1904, the club moved from its original home on the banks of the Mississippi River to a new facility that was then located on Washington Street in Minooka. During this time, the club hosted many functions such as weddings and funerals that attracted people from all over Illinois. In 1916, the club moved again when it was determined that its new location would be too small for them to continue meeting annually. The club continued meeting sporadically until they merged with the Carbondale Rifle & Pistol Club in 1949 which led to their current name of The Minooka Rifle & Pistol Club

In 1846, the first permanent settler in Minooka was John A. Park, who arrived with his family on a small farm near present-day Kankakee. In 1851, James H. Cook built a cabin on the same site and named it after his father, James Cook Jr., who had died in 1847. The village of Minooka was founded on July 4, 1858 by Capt. George Silliman and six other pioneers under the leadership of Rufus Kingbee. The community rapidly grew around its Presbyterian church, which served as the center of social life for residents from all over Illinois and Kentucky before moving to their new location in 1861. By 1865, however, the church had been destroyed by fire; nevertheless,Minooka continued to grow until it reached its current size of approximately 80 households in 1967. During World War II (1939-1945), Minooka played an important role in the war effort due to its proximity to major military installations including Camp Douglas and Fort Sheridan on Chicago's North Side and Camp Butler near Rockford. When hostilities ended, MinOOKA reverted back to civilian control but continued to serve as a rural outpost for many years afterwards. Today, the town is home to a variety of businesses including three banks (Citibanknorthwest bank & Trust Co., First National Bank & Trust Company and United Bank & Trust Company), several restaurants/bars/cafes/grocersanchors/, four schools (Kankakee Consolidated School District #1 - public school; Kankakee Consolidated School District #2 - private school; Indianola Central High School - high school; Southside Community College - college), two churches (Presbyterian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - building now used as a library; Methodist Episcopal Church) and one post office (First National Bank).
