Minooka, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,577 at the 2010 census. The Minooka ZIP code is 61555. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The history of Minooka goes back to 1837 when James Aiken and his brother-in-law, Elijah Bassett bought 640 acres (260 hectares) of land in what is now Minooka Township from Jacob Sutter. Aiken renamed the tract "Mint Hill" after himself and built a gristmill on the stream that ran through it. He also developed a small cotton gin on the property which he named Mint Hill Cotton Gin Company. In 1857, Aiken sold his holdings to John Stephenson for $8,000 cash and became one of Stephenson's trustees for the new school district in Du Page County. In 1858, he served as president of School District No. 2 inDu Page County and later became its first superintendent. In 1865, Aiken donated triangular lot No 5 to Bellefontaine Methodist Church which still stands today as their churchyard spot adjacent to North Avenue between Second Street and Third Street east of Main Street in MinOOKA township limits

Minooka, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Minooka were James and Nancy Hinkle who arrived in 1824. When their land was purchased by the Federal government for $4,000 (in present-day McLean County), they named their new home "Hinkle's Prairie" after themselves. In 1830, James Hinkle married Rachelle Fenton and together they started to grow wheat on their farmstead which became known as "Fenton's Prairie". In 1836, William Witherspoon moved his family to Minooka from Rockford and began to raise corn on his farmstead which became known as "Witherspoon's Cornfield". In 1846, George Washington Lewis bought 5 acres of land adjacent to Fenton's Prairie and erected a log cabin which he called "Lewis' Cabin". He also started to raised chickens on this property which became known as "Lewis' Farm". In 1868, John A. Shearer founded the First National Bank of Minooka with five other investors. The bank operated until it merged into Wells Fargo in 1998. The post office was established at Minooka in 1873; it changed its name to Springfield in 1907 when the town incorporated. A high school opened in 1915 and continued operation until 1979; it was replaced by McLean Community High School which opened in 1984). In 2006-2007 a new high school building was built south of the old high school site that provides education for 2200 students grades 9 through 12th grade. The current high school campus covers an area of . According to the 2010 census there are 1,951 people living in Minooka Township including 621 households and 459 families (the population density is 13 people per square mile). On September 17, 1871, the town of Minooka was organized following the annexation of the village by the state. The town was named in honor of General James H. Cooke, who had been Governor of Illinois during the Mexican-American War and had helped to settle Minooka.
