Minooka is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the Chicago River, northwest of the city's central business district. The first European to enter what is now Minooka were two Frenchmen named Pierre and Jean Chouteau in 1814 when they built a fur trading post on the river’s bank about three miles upstream from its present site. In 1837, John M. Richardson founded Richardson’s Mills here and made it one of his main interests in town. The milling industry declined after World War II but has since come back with a new generation of entrepreneurs; among them are Erik Olson, president of First Midwest Bank; Alvin Carlson, founder and CEO of Carlson Restaurants; and Dave Kellar, president and CEO of Menard’s department store chain. A post office was established at Minooka in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. It was renamed Ridgway (after Ulysses S. Grant Ridgway) after James Hodge Ridgway who served as Postmaster General from 1865-1868 during the American Civil War. A school opened here in 1861 as part of a larger program to provide education for frontier pioneers living near Chicago.. In 1898 – following construction by architect Alfred Beadle – Minooka's first civic building was erected: a two-story frame structure which housed both public library (now called Prairie View A&M University Library) and government offices including court house/ jail (1901), library annex (1902), fire station (1904), telephone exchange (1906), water tower (1908). At that time Minooka had just 1 population totaling 184 people living within its limits! In 1907–09 Drury & Herring opened their successful grocery store at 12 S Jackson St., opposite School Annex No 2 on Main Street - becoming one of MinOOKA'S most long-standing businesses! From 1908 until her death in 1966 rhe wife Mrs Dorothy Drury ran this store alone until Mrs Dorothy Sayre took over complete ownership upon her husband's death - continuing until 1982 when that same building became home to PNC Banknorthwest Plaza . . . After more than 50 years service this venerable retail building finally closed its doors early last year due to numerous health concerns brought about by age & lackOf use (& competition)!

It lies on a branch of the Kankakee River and has a post office with ZIP code 61970. The population was 376 at the 2010 census. The earliest known settlers in Minooka were people who took up land north of present-day Minooka on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway about 1872. They named their new settlement for Mount Minooka, which they saw from their farmhouse on Sawmill Creek. In 1907, after years of work by local volunteers, the first post office was opened in MinOOKA with mail service from Chicagoland Union Station. In 1916, the namewas changed toMinOOKA to reflect its growing importance as a rural community with many businesses and residents. In 1951, when Kane County was created, much of what is now Kane County lay within Cook County and soMinOOKA's annexation into CookCounty marked an important milestone in its history.
